This is the big month for turkey vulture migration. The last half of
September and very early October are when large flocks (100+) have
been seen over Seattle and the surrounding areas as they head south.
So, while you're out looking for warblers in the trees and shorebirds
on the mudflats, don't forget to look up once in a while. Following
is the report for Washington, British Columbia, and Oregon for August 2007:

01 -- 30-50 circling over I-90 between Cle Elum and Easton (Wow!
those rocky hillsides must really be productive); 3 on the Cascade
Crest north of Windy Gap
02 -- 6 soaring at treetop level over Sea Bird Island, B.C. (eastern
Fraser Valley)
03 -- ? five miles west of Portland, Oregon
04 -- 3 over the Old Olympic Hwy, Sequim; 1 soaring over Port Susan
Bay NCP; 1 over west Olympia
05 -- 2 near Elma; ? at Pipers Lagoon, Nanaimo, B.C.
06 -- 2 west of the Snoqualmie Summit; 1 in Langley, B.C.
07 -- 1 over the Quimper Peninsula
09 -- 12 sitting on the fence and ground near Hwy 702
10 -- 2 at Couer d'Alene; 16-20 on fence posts at Long Lake near Kamloops, B.C.
11 -- 2 soaring east of Preston; 5 south of Concrete
12 -- 1 harassing a golden eagle near Squamish, B.C.; ? at the
Englishman River, Parksville, B.C.
17 -- 12 over the Dungeness River
18 -- 1 in the Everett/Silver Lake area; 1 over Mason Lake
19 -- 1 near the Quillayute River; ? at Neck Point Park, Nanaimo, B.C.
21 -- 7 feeding on the ground at the western end of Wenzel Slough
Road; 1 at Maplewood CA, North Vancouver, B.C.
22 -- 5 circling over English Boom, Camano Island; 1 at Nisqually NWR
25 -- 8 circling just north of Raymond
26 -- 1 west of Cle Elum; 2 between the Cle Elum exits; 6 north of
Cle Elum; 1 on the Teanaway River Road; 2 seen further along the
Teanaway River Road
28 -- 1 at Mounts Road, Pierce County
26 -- ? at the Nanaimo River estuary, B.C.; 1 at Bottle Beach; 3 at
John's River

Hopefully, there will be some good sightings later this month. At
Salt Creek we often see flocks of 400+ on very special days - always
neat to see them come in off the water and low enough to tell birds
of the year from adults (if we had time!)
