Hello,

I spent Thursday morning this week birding the Sullivan Lake to Mt Salmo
area. The birds were not numerous (as back in August), but they were
present. The day began with one HARLEQUIN DUCK sitting on Sullivan Lake
right after daybreak. NF Road 2220 on the way to Mt Salmo had the usual
suspects.

Along the Salmo Divide Trail, I saw Mt Chickadees, BOREAL CHICKADEES (2),
Red & WHITE WINGED CROSSBILLS (2), American Pipit. White Crowned and
Lincoln's Sparrow, Steller's and Gray Jays (many), Hairy and one THREE TOED
WOODPECKER.

The spur to the summit produced a make DUSKY GROUSE, a Sharp Shinned Hawk,
and more Gray Jays and Clark's Nutcrackers.

A trip up the road to Crawford State Park did not produce much except a
family of 6 Ruffed Grouse, both red and gray phases noted.

A brief survey of the Pend Oreille River and Calispell Lake revealed that
the water levels were back up and the shorebirds were virtually nonexistent.
Timing is everything. Two White Pelicans were still present on Calispell.

I enjoyed the company of a Pika up on Salmo and a Black Bear that meandered
across LeClerc Creek Rd on the Kalispell Reservation.

Blessings,

Terry Little
