I spent two hours of this beautiful Sunday afternoon at the Nature
Conservancy property at Port Susan Bay from 3:00 to 5:00 pm. Among the 40+ juvenile
Long-billed Dowitchers, there was one juv. Sharp-tailed Sandpiper. There
were NO Pectoral Sandpipers present. Other shorebirds included 4 Short-billed
Dowitchers (juvs), 6 Lesser Yellowlegs, 8 Greater Yellowlegs, 2 juv. Baird's
Sandpipers, 50 juv. Western Sandpipers, and a lone Red-necked Phalarope. Lots
of ducks, Marsh Wrens, Yellowthroats, Va Rail, Harrier, Kestrel, and a
soaring TV rounded out my afternoon. I did manage to get a few decent digi-scope
shots of the Sharp-tailed. If anyone is interested, I would be glad to send
the photos out if you contact me privately.
If you try for the Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, be sure to call ahead to get
permission to enter the preserve, it is closed to the public without permission.
