Hiya tweets!

Took a non-birding friend that just moved here from New Mexico to the Union Bay Natural Area (aka UBNA) next to the UW Football Stadium. Saw a few good birds, including Green Herons, but mostly just the usual suspects.

Then at 5:37pm, standing at the western-most edge of the natural area (by the mud islands that we saw shorebirds hanging out at during migration recently) and facing west and heard an odd sound. I turned my head and heard it again, and then I looked up. I saw 4 BIG birds and told my friend to give me back my binoculars...quick! Sure enough, there were 4 Sandhill Cranes flying north, right above the ball fields at the UW! I figured they were heading to the Skagit Wildlife Area or somesuch, but the sight was amazing.

I have been going to UBNA for some 10 years now and have never seen these birds here. Closest was a bird that flew by the Green River Natural Area down in Kent in Fall 2002. Not sure how many sightings of SACR there have been from UBNA, but this one is definite! That gives me 127 species at UBNA for 2007!
