Dear Ruth, tweets,

It?s almost impossible to accept that kind of shocking news. No words can describe the sorrow that came after I read it. The life, the love that your son has devoted to birds and shared it with his fellow birders will be greatly missed. When someone like him, with so much energy and passion for wildlife leaves, there is always a big empty space left behind. Many times, when I saw and met two of you out there in the field, I wished I could go watching birds with my mom like Patrick does. It hurts so much to imagine that next time, when some rare vagrant shows up that Patrick will not be there. His report to Tweeters group we will not see anymore. I believe the upcoming years without Patrick Sullivan will reveal what a powerful legacy one young man can leave for generations. Specially when a great idea of an education fund in his name will be realized. We will never apprehend the pain that he and many, many other young kids had to go through, battling their
depressions caused by this terrible illness. And they can get stranded so easy, simply because they don?t know, they just don?t know what is happening with them. I wish in this moment that we could tell all of them what to do, where to go for help, how to find the way back. Just as we wished to ourselves that the tired little shore bird from a different continent that landed on the sandy Pacific coast would have found the right direction to his flock. Patrick, I know you haven?t left us. You just took off with those cranes flying over Montesano. I know we will see you again with them in the spring. Just like we see Kevin Li when Purple Martins arrive to their nests. There will be lots of them here in beautiful Washington, yes, ten thousands or more, flying back again like memories, to the places you loved. Dear Ruth, our thoughts and hearts are with you. Be strong, be strong, we are with you.
