An eager young man approached my wife and me while we were doggedly
searching for a Lesser Black-backed Gull on the desolate tide flats near
Tacoma many years ago. After we introduced ourselves and chatted about the
gull, we decided to search other areas that the young man had recommended as
possibilities. As we parted, he said shyly, yet proudly, "My mother
discovered that bird first." We are all blessed for having Patrick and Ruth
in our community. Together, they had all the virtues that we value.
