I would like to share with you some of my thoughts about and experiences with Patrick Sullivan. I'll try to be brief. I have a hunch that there are still Tweeters who have some things to say as well.

In September of 2005, I was with a group of people at the Westport marina. I suppose we were looking for a Bar-tailed Godwit or perhaps a Hudsonian. I would have missed completely the young Black-crowned Night-Heron flying overhead had not Patrick called it out. Patrick could focus on a fine bird while not losing focus on other birds within view or earshot. His eyes and ears did not filter out unlikely birds for whatever location. Who, for instance, would expect a Black-crowned Night-Heron at the Westport marina? He saw and heard birds that others didn't. This was partly a result of his natural gift, and partly due to the enormous effort he put into his hobby. Rare birds do not slap you on the behind; they must be earned.

Were I to list the fantastic birds I have enjoyed thru the efforts of Ruth and Patrick Sullivan, the list would be a long one. Others have mentioned the Temminck's Stint at the Ocean Shores STP. It was almost as much fun watching Patrick share this incredible find with many other birders as it was watching the bird itself.

He found the birds. He shared the birds. I was aware of the battle he fought within, but I NEVER saw it. In the field he was always smiling, and ready to find that next fine bird.

I seem to be obsessed with the thought of something good coming from the loss of Patrick. Can't help it. I like what Igor said in his previous message about helping those with problems similar to Patrick's. Perhaps in addition to memorial funds and trails, we may attempt to be a bit kinder to one another. A bit more understanding and forgiving. A smile can go a long way. I will not soon forget Patrick's.

Ruth, I have not forgotten the Elegant Terns you showed me at Ocean Shores in July of 1997. I thank you again. A huge number of Washington birders is thinking about you right now. Please count me among them.
