Washington birders and especially Ruth,

As a fellow 'young birder' who grew up with birds and other birdwatchers I just want to say that the sadness of Patrick's passing reaches far beyond the Washington border. We only birded together a few times, but Patrick and I got along very well. We took off together on a search of neighborhood streets for the Redwing in Olympia and chatted the whole time. We never found the bird but that's the way it goes. On another trip Patrick and Ruth were kind enough to accompany myself and some friends from Canada around the different Ocean Shores hotspots. Patrick had his scope slung over his shoulder. He was almost in a jog as we headed out towards Bottle Beach and he was pishing at the same time. I thought this guy is a birding machine. And he was. I think I speak for all birders here in BC who have met, or even corresponded with Ruth and Patrick over the years when I say we will miss him. Ruth, my thoughts go out to you.
