I live in Kenmore, on the north end of Lake Washington. My friend's mother is 92 and has lived in Lake Forest Park since the 40's and she's told me quite a bit about what the north end was like back then. Apparently, the Kenmore area where I live now used to be a long stretch of forest and there were large packs of coyotes that lived in the hillsides on the north end of the lake. She said they were everywhere back then. As they developed the north end, the coyotes kept moving to the undeveloped portions of woods in the Brier-Bothell-Kenmore area along the King-Snohomish border. We had several areas of woods that were several acres wide. But in the past two years, developers have taken out many acres of woodland along the King-Snohomish line to put in new developments. Since this development started taking place, a lot of animals have been displaced. In my neighborhood, we are getting a lot of rabbits, rats, and raccoons. But the thing that's upsetting is
that we're losing our coyote population. They seem to be moving out of the area.

Last year I found out that developers have been putting in permit applications to develop every single foot of the last undeveloped areas in the north end that are left. We've seen developers put in six houses on a single acre in my neighborhood. But when people try to get information about the public hearings on these development projects before the developers get permits, we are not getting the mailings about the times of the meetings, so we are not being given the opportunity to publicly object to the development plans.

In Kenmore there was also a group that was trying to get the right to develop St. Edwards Park, which is the last publicly owned undeveloped space on the water on the north end of the lake. Luckily, our public officials were able to prevent developers from buying the land at St. Edwards Park. Our public officials are now working to convert the old monastery building in that park, which has been closed for many years, to a natural history museum.

I don't know if many people in the area are aware of the intense fight that the people in the north end are involved in right now. It has been heating up for quite awhile and I've been to quite a few public meetings where there's been a lot of shouting at city council members because people are fed up with the level of development we are seeing. Many people in Kenmore are seeing the upcoming election for the Kenmore City Council as the most important election in the history of the north end because the people on the Kenmore City Council now are so corrupt. They absolutely do not listen to the people of Kenmore who do not want all of this development to take place.

Hello tweeters.

Before I get started I would like to take a moment to remember Patrick, although like many I have never met him his writing touched all of us and we will miss him greatly. It is so nice to see a group of people so caring for each other. You will always have a place in our hearts.

Two days ago while walking on 17th and highland at about 10:00 at night my brother spotted a coyote directly across the street from him. The coyote passed pack and forward and then scampered off towards interlaken park. I have seen signs around the neighborhood saying, "warning coyotes have been seen attacking neighborhood pets!" but thought that maybe they had been mistaken for a large stray dog. The only place they could be living is in Interlaken park for volunteer is much to small and doesn't have nearly enough cover. (for those of you not familiar with interlaken it is a large stretch of park going from monlake to capital hill) If anyone has something to say about the coyotes I would love to hear it!

Thanks,

Jonathan Frankel
