while it appears highly unlikely one might acquire west nile from handling a dead infected bird, it appears not to be impossible. if the handler had a break in the skin and fluids from the bird contacted the breach (e.g., the bird has a broken bone protruding from the carcass), transmission might be possible. human to human transmission by transfusion and (one reported case) breast feeding have been shown. also there is some evidence the disease can be transmitted by ticks. thus, in my judgment, it is not a good idea to handle dead birds while unprotected.
