Hi Robert, tweets,

Slightly different answers to your question than what you already got. Yes, those reports are good, but reading your email, I have a different take for what you were after.

Having read all of the reports available for UBNA (aka the Fill), I can say that pretty much all of them have to do with what has been seen there (and by "seen", it includes flyovers, as does my count further down) all time, even if only once. To me that was helpful, but didn't answer my question, which was how much can you see there in one year? A single day?

Well, I did my senior thesis field work out there last year, and visited some 137 times in 2007. In that time, I saw 142 species, and I know of at least 4 other species that were seen there that I did not, so at least 146 species showed up at UBNA in 2007.

As for a single day, I had 3 days over 60 species last year, and already have two days of 58 & 59 species at UBNA in 2008. My best day there ever was 72, in 2005. And when I got home, someone mentioned a Blue-winged Teal that I had completely missed, and there were probably others too.

So to summarize: yes, somewhere between 192-208 species have been seen at UBNA all-time as near as I can tell. and I would also say that on a really good day with the right conditions in spring, one could probably find 70-80 species. But one has to be both good with the auditory skills, as well as lucky. Finally, I'd say that one can definitely find 145 species there in a single year, and maybe a lot more. But you'd have to be out there a lot, and at all different times of day and all different types of weather to maximize it like I was able to do.

Hope this helps Robert. It was a good question about my favorite place in Seattle. Cheers!

Dearest Tweets,

Just curious, does anyone have a total, i.e., maximum, species count
for "The Fill", aka Union Bay Unnatural Area?

My all time high in one visit was 57, within a 90 minute time span.
But I'm interested in a total count for the site (no need to list all
the species if inconvenient).

Many thanks,
Robert
