"My" Savannah sparrow returned to Puyallup today. Every year for since I can remember a male sits on my
neighbor's fence in about the same place, give or take 20 feet and sings for about a month. Since I don't
think sparrows live 30 years, it would seem that they do manage to reproduce here in a suburban
environment with numerous at- large cats roaming my property and lend credence to the assertion on the
Cornell website that:
"In many parts of the species' range, especially in coastal areas and islands, Savannah Sparrows tend very strongly to
return each year to the area where they hatched. This tendency, called natal philopatry, is the driving force for
differentiation of numerous Savannah Sparrow subspecies. "
