Hi Tweeters,

Two of the Medina Park Great Blue Heron nests did not
waste anytime getting on eggs this year and I could
hear the hatchlings this evening. My first sighting
this year of the herons return to the nests was Feb 29
and by the next visit on March 7 it appeared two of
three of the exposed cottonwood nests were on eggs.
There are about 5 nests in the tallest douglas fir but
they were much slower getting organized for breeding
but all of them appear to be on eggs now. I am
looking forward to the dinosaur phase of the chicks
and the fun of trying to figure out how many are in
each nest.

Here are some lame directions, if you need better
google St Thomas Episcopal Church, the park is right
across the street. From I-405 take the NE 8th exit,
go west past Bellevue Square, stay on NE 8th straight,
it changes names but if you stick with it you will hit
a 5 way stop with a Chevron on the left. The park
will be basically right in front of you, go straight
1/2 block and park by the pond. You can't miss the
leaning cottonwood with three big nests in it.

I did see Bald Eagle twice tonight at the park, one a
very high flyover and one a much lower cruise over.
There was some eagle pressure last year but no losses
and I hope that pattern continues although I fear it
is inevitable that the herons at some point will
become prey for the eagles.
