Our turkey vultures are returning! Mostly in small groups, but
occasionally a bunch will appear. A lot of them will be heading north
to their breeding grounds in British Columbia, but a lot will stay in
Washington, too. Following is the report for March 2008 (plus a
couple of late Februrary reports) in British Columbia, Washington,
and Oregon (and Kansas!):

February
24 -- 3 circling a goat or calf carcass north of Fall City.
25 -- 1 west of Hampton.

March
04 -- 2 near Fort Worden
05 -- 1 over Port Angeles
08 -- a kettle of 9 heading north from Point-No-Point; 1 near the
Twin Barns at Nisqually NWR
09 -- 1 soaring over the Orcas ferry dock; 41 during a 30-min.period
strung out in small groups north of Quilcene; 1 at the Julia Butler Hansen NWR
11 -- 1 at Lopez Island
12 -- 1 near Port Angeles
13 -- 3 on the ground in a pasture at Willow Grove Park near Longview
14 -- 2 drifted by northeast Olympia
15 -- 1 over the Wenzel Slough Road; 1 north of Bellingham; 1 jct.of
Dry Creek Rd/Hwy10; 1 over Ellensburg
16 -- 1 at Buttertubs Marsh, Nanaimo, B.C.
19 -- 6 over the Dungeness River; 1 near Marymoor heading north
21 -- 1 circling just north of Fall City
23 -- 1 on the Brewster Flats, Okanogan County; one west of Electric
City; 1 soaring over the South Cle Elum Ridge; 4 over Sequim; 4 west
of Discovery Bay; 11 over jct.of Hwys 101/104; 1 near Abbotsford, B.C.
24 -- 3 near Gerhardt, Oregon; 2 at Roy
25 -- 1 standing alongside the road at Shelton
26 -- 1 over the Maple Leaf Reservoir, Seattle
27 -- 3 in a mini-kettle south of Anacortes; 2 cruising along a ditch
near Eatonville
30 -- 3 over Peoh Point, Cle Elum; 1 high over Olympia; 1 soaring
with a bald eagle over the Theler Wetlands; 1 above Lime Kiln Park on
San Juan Island being harassed by a bald eagle; 5 soaring between
Ellensburg and Cle Elum
31 -- 1 soaring over the White Bluff overlook, Wahluke Slope, Hanford
Reach NM; 2 along Neal Road; 1 heading due west in hail and rain
south of Tumwater
*31 -- hundreds of polite turkey vultures in western Kansas and along
the drive to the Platte River in late March.

Thanks so much for your vulture sightings. April should be an even
busier month. Many of this month's reports are of "first sighting of
the year" type. So, keep looking up!
