An old friend of mine lives along the Umatilla River just southwest of Stanfield, Oregon. He reports that on Friday, April 4th, he heard, then saw and ultimately photographed a Pileated Woodpecker in the mature cottonwoods along the river there. It hasn't been seen there since.

About 20 years ago this time of year my 3rd wife Sandra and daughter Buffie (then 19 years old) insisted they'd seen a Pileated Woodpecker in a mature mulberry tree just north of our then residence in Two River County Park. No photo & no one I told the story to at the time accepted the possibility.
