Tweeters,

After a short kayak out to Hope Island, while resting on the beach, my husband and I saw a Pelagic Cormorant in breeding plumage fly past with prominent white flanks! It flew about 50 feet from the shore, and then settled in for a little fishing. I was really surprised to see a Pelagic this far south in the Sound. Otherwise the bird activity in the area was a little low, with the exception of a large group of surf scoters off the western side of Squaxin Island, several Horned Grebes, Buffleheads, and a couple Pigeon Guillemots. Really a beautiful day to be out on the water.
