Dear Tweeters,

Sorry for late report; yesterday I found two
Long-billed Curlews on the Samish Flats. They were
west of the Samish East Nineties, with a small flock
of Mallards.

That spot can be reached by driving westward from
Edison, through the tiny "town" of West Edison (at the
bridge that crosses the mouth of the Samish River),
and then proceeding to a set of 90-degree bends. One
could park at the northerly of these two bends, walk
halfway to the next bend, and scan the fields to the
west. The birds were out there a good ways, but
eventually, Kraig and Kathy Kemper, Joel Brady-Power
and I were able to make a good ID by dint of some
serious scope squinting.

The birds kept apart for much of the time, one of them
bathing in a large puddle, while the other foraged
along a ploughed-up ridge of dry soil. I think the
birds were both males; neither had what we could call
an enormous bill, but the bills were too long for
Whimbrel bills. The crowns were streaked rather than
striped, and there was definitely some rusty color
visible under the wings, even when the birds were
perched with wings stretched out.

Also, Joel reported seeing a large flock of
Bonaparte's Gulls off the little park on Samish
Island.
