Good morning Tweeters,

In 2003 Oregon's Bob Altman, working for The American Bird Conservancy,
put together a project for identifying Black Swift waterfall nest
sites. He put together a web site that listed the accessible
waterfalls in Washington and Oregon that looked promising. Invitations
went out on OBOL and Tweeters inviting us to "adapt" a waterfall and
spend two hours around sunset, once in July, and once in August,
attempting to detect Black Swifts.

In response to his requests for help, 103 participants visited 82
waterfalls that summer, more than half of them at least twice as the
protocol suggested. Volunteers from the birding community and wildlife
personnel who surveyed on their own time conducted more than 90% of the
visits. The Tweeters community stepped up to this challenge, and those
who participated in this study understand how much more of a commitment
it takes to hike a couple miles into a wildness area, and then out by
flashlight, compared to watching your neighbor's chimney at sunset.

Maybe we need a website for the upcoming Audubon/Tweeters Vaux's Swift
2008 spring migration roost site search. We do have an observation
form ready to go.

Maybe we need a catchy name for the project? I've got two candidates
VAUX'S UP or perhaps better, VAUX'S HAPPENING.
