I have an odd White-crown Sparrow in my yard in Bridgeport, Wash., Douglas
Co. It has to be a White-crown, because its head and bill match, as does
the gray breast and nape. But the back of the bird, and its tail and
flanks are dark brown and black, with no wing bars. It also has longer
legs than the other birds. The feathers on the flanks seem to be
"scruffy" looking; like he just took a bath and hasn't "combed" them into
place. The underside of tail is also dark brown, with some black. On the
breast you can see what looks like black feathers trying to come in. They
are
under the gray. A friend will try to get a photo tomorrow. If you have
any ideas, I'd love to hear them. Meredith Spencer, Bridgeport
