John,

Your unknown bird is a Barrow's Goldeneye duckling. Barrow's Goldeneyes are
regular breeders at Lightning Lake; Common Goldeneyes nest in BC only much
farther east.

As for the woodpecker, it was almost certainly an Am. Three-toed.
Black-backed Woodpeckers are rare in and near Manning Park, and I've never
seen one there in decades of frequent visits; on the other hand, Am.
Three-toeds are fairly common.

All the best,

Tweeters,

I was in BC last week and saw a bird that I am having trouble with. Please
help.

Also, are there both black-backed and three-toed woodpeckers at Lightning
lake? I saw one of the two hammering on dead trees (about 25-30 ft up) on
the north side of the lake. I am pretty sure that I saw the checked back,
but I did not have my book with, to verify what else to check.

thanks,
