Dear Tweeters,

Today there were eight species of shorebirds on Cockreham Island's south pond. Cockreham Island is in Skagit County, between Sedro-Woolley and Hamilton.

I am not sure if I have ever seen so many kinds of shorebirds there all at once. There were:

4 Killdeer;
1 Long-billed Dowitcher;
1 Least Sandpiper;
1 SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER;
4 Western Sandpipers;
1 Lesser Yellowlegs;
2 Spotted Sandpipers;
2 SOLITARY SANDPIPERS.

The land surrounding this small pond has changed hands. The farmer sold out to a company that is supposedly planning to raise berries there. I suspect that this pond, and Cockreham Island's west pond, may be in for some land-use changes that may compromise the birding there. In places where I have seen berries go in, the birding has gone downhill. Flocks of waterfowl, shorebirds, and gulls do not hang out in berry patches! I am keeping my fingers crossed.

As I got out of the car this evening, four Common Nighthawks flew over my house, which is not far from Cockreham. This has not been a banner year for them, so it was nice to see a flock.
