Today my wife and I went out to the Ridgefield NWR, in Clark
County, for an afternoon of birding. A few migrants are beginning to show
and if the water levels continue to drop some more shorebirds should be
available to look over. The only ones we found today were KILLDEER,
GREATER YELLOWLEGS, LEAST SANDPIPER, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER and WILSON'S
SNIPE.
In the slough by the Observation Blind we did see two adult
BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, these birds were best seen by looking back up
the slough from just past the blind parking lot.
While parked at the "three trees" at the south end of Rest Lake
we were treated to at least four BLACK SWIFTS flying low over the water
of Rest Lake and the wetlands on the south side of the road. There were
over a dozen BANK SWALLOWS in the mix of swallows and swifts there,
easily the largest group of these birds I have ever encountered in Clark
County. While watching the swifts Susan spotted a dark colored MERLIN
overhead flying to the north.
