RARE BIRD ALERT for a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER in Pitt Meadows
on August 3rd, a POMARINE JAEGER near the foot of 96th Street in
Delta on August 5th, and out of town for a LESSER GOLDFINCH seen daily in
Abbotsford from July 18th to August 8th


Sightings for Friday, August 8th

The male LESSER GOLDFINCH at 2093 Topaz Street in Abbotsford is
still coming daily to the feeders, but is being seen most often in the evenings.

The LESSER GOLDFINCH is still being seen daily at 2093 Topaz Street
in Abbotsford.


Sightings for Tuesday, August 5th

A POMARINE JAEGER, very rare in the area, was seen at the foot of 96th
Street on Boundary Bay in Delta. Also in Delta, 2 RED-NECKED
PHALAROPES and 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS were seen among other
shorebirds at the Beach Grove Lagoon at the east foot of 12th Avenue.

At Blackie Spit Park in Surrey, a MARBLED GODWIT, a LONG-BILLED
CURLEW and a WHIMBREL were seen at the mouth of the
Nicomekl River.

Twelve COMMON NIGHTHAWKS were seen in the evening near 79th
Avenue and 114A Street in North Delta.

Five SANDHILL CRANES were seen flying over the Langley airport in
Langley.

A MAGNOLIA WARBLER was reported from Whistler, on Highway 99
north of Vancouver.

On a boat trip on Indian Arm north of Vancouver, an early COMMON
TERN was observed.

Sightings for Monday, August 4th

The LESSER GOLDFINCH was reported again at Abbotsford.

Another juvenile EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE was found, this one
at 4126 River Road in Delta, almost certainly from a different nest
than the ones seen on 96th Street.

A RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was seen near the foot of 96th on Boundary
Bay in Delta.


Sightings for Sunday, August 3rd

A BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER, a casual migrant in the area, was reported
from the Grant Narrows nature dyke at Pitt Meadows. Also here were 3 fledgling EASTERN KINGBIRDS.

An immature NORTHERN GOSHAWK was reported from near 10th Avenue
and Blanca Street in Vancouver. If correctly identified, this would be
a very early fall record. Nearby, an out-of-place immature YELLOW-HEADED
BLACKBIRD appeared on a playing field near 16th Avenue and Camosun
Street.

Shorebirds observed included a LONG-BILLED CURLEW on Boundary Bay,
presumably near the foot of 96th Street, another LONG-BILLED CURLEW
and a MARBLED GODWIT at Blackie Spit in Surrey, and 7WHIMBRELS
and the WILLET along the Tsawwassen ferry jetty in Delta.


Sightings for Saturday, August 2nd

Ten BLACK TURNSTONES, a SANDERLING, and several WHIMBRELS were
seen at the Tsawwassen ferry terminal in Delta.

An early PARASITIC JAEGER was seen from the ferry near the Sandheads
light at the mouth of the Fraser River.

Two TURKEY VULTURES were seen along the Fraser Highway in Surrey, one
near 176th Street and one near 148th Street.


Sightings for Friday, August 1st

The LESSER GOLDFINCH was seen again at 2093 Topaz Street in
Abbotsford.


Sightings for Thursday, July 31st

At Colony Farm Regional Park, on the Port Coquitlam side, sightings
included a GREEN HERON, an AMERICAN BITTERN, 5 EASTERN
KINGBIRDS, and several PURPLE MARTINS.

Sightings for Wednesday, July 30th

Seven EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES were present at 4655 96th Street
in Delta, not far south of Highway 99, and two of these were obviously
recently-fledged young. This is the first known breeding record of the
species in coastal BC.


Sightings for Tuesday, July 29th

The male LESSER GOLDFINCH at 2093 Topaz Street in Abbotsford is
still coming daily to the seed feeders.

Nine WHIMBRELS and 4 BLACK TURNSTONES were seen at the
Tsawwassen ferry terminal in Delta.


Sightings for Monday, July 28th

A BROWN PELICAN, perhaps the same one seen earlier in the same area,
was photographed on the breakwater south of the Tsawwassen ferry
terminal in Delta.


Sightings for Sunday, July 27th

A WANDERING TATTLER, a very rare migrant, was seen at the end of
the Iona Island south jetty in Richmond. Nearby were 15 SURF SCOTERS
and 2 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS. Shorebirds in the Iona sewage ponds
included 3 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS.

Large numbers of shorebirds near the foot of 96th Street on Boundary Bay
In Delta included 70 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 3 RUDDY TURNSTONES,
2 RED KNOTS, 100 SANDERLINGS, and 10 DUNLIN, as well as large
numbers of peeps and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS.

Four HEERMANN?S GULLS and two flyby WHIMBRELS were seen from
Point Roberts, Washington.

At the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta, 2 each of STILT SANDPIPERS,
WILSON?S PHALAROPES, and RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were seen.
