Subject: [Tweeters] Sunrise and Second Burroughs

My wife and I were at Sunrise on the 12th (same time as Eastside Audubon).
We also went up First Burroughs and then on to Second Burroughs. Just as we
arrived at the top, we saw a flock of five or six small finch-like birds.
We both got good looks, but unfortunately was unable to photograph them.



The birds they were not include: American Pipit (bill wrong completely),
Grey-crowned Rosy Finch, any other finch (no reddish crown at all). What
did match our sighting was the Lapland Longspur. The yellowish bill, the
pattern on the back and head, the overall yellow/brown hue with strong rust
colors, the white outer tail feather, and streaks on the side of the breasts
all match. We did not see any male in breeding plumage though.



I'd guess we were probably imagining these birds.



We did, however, get a really good look at a Sooty Grouse on the Sourdough
Ridge trail on the way back. Here is a photo:
