Dear Tweeters,

Three juvenile Northern Goshawks have been hanging around the Thunder Woods Nature Trail in southeastern Whatcom County. These birds have been closely observed by competent birders on several occasions; observers have included at least one ornithologist. The last sighting I know of was on Sunday last. The birds were flying around the nature trail, and could even be seen from the signs at the start of the trail ("please stay on trail" and "thank you"). The birds have been extremely vocal.

This site is close to Thunder Arm, by Colonial Creek Campground, along State Route 20, well east of Newhalem and Diablo. Colonial Creek Campground is near the causeway that crosses Thunder Arm. It is on the boat-launch side of the highway (not the Thunder Knob side). Park near the restrooms, as if you were going to the amphitheatre. Walk a very few hundred meters on level ground, going upstream along Thunder Arm, until you reach the second trail to the right. The first trail just goes back to the backpackers' tent site loop. The nature trail is up ahead a short distance, and well signed. The birds have been seen all along this trail, and also on the tenting loop. There are at least three juveniles; there may also be an adult, but that is not clear.

Yours truly,

Gary Bletsch
