Hi everyone,
I have always looked forward to late July when the cascara tree (Rhamnus purshiana) in my back yard begins to produces fruit. it is the only time of year that Cedar Waxwings (one of my favorite birds) visit my yard. This year however I have paid more attention to the tree and noticed that besides waxwings the tree is also attracting a number of other species. In the past few weeks I have spent my breakfast time watching Western Tanagers, American Robins, Black-headed Grosbeaks, Warbling Vireo, Swainson's Thrush, Spotted Towhee and European Starlings feasting on the berries. I have also seen flocks of Bushtits and Chickadees eating in the cascara tree although I'm not sure if they are eating the fruit or collecting bugs off of the berries.
