Conversation: A very strange Barn Swallow
Subject: A very strange Barn Swallow

Today Judy Meredith and I saw a Barn Swallow at Leadbetter Point, Pacific
Co., Washington that had a VERY long tail with white "racquets" at the
tail's end, something like a motmot's tail with apparently bare feather
shafts. The tail was clearly longer than the body. The very quick
momentary impression was that it was a Fork-tailed or Scissor-tailed
Flycatcher, but it was in every way other than the tail clearly a Barn
Swallow. (It was with a small flock of normal appearing Barn Swallows.) We
were sure it was the tail we were watching and not something attached to the
tail.
