A couple days ago I watched a couple of male towhees confront each other
with much tail flaring and vocalizing and one finally flew away, chased by
the other, who then perched on a prominent spot for some time, shows lots of
white on its tail and vocalizing. If this were spring I'd just think it was
the usually territorial nesting behavior, but this is late mid August. I got
thinking and wondering if local resident birds set up and defend winter
territories?
