Today, 8-21-08, we had the first of the fall migrants show up in
good numbers at our place in the west end of the Columbia River Gorge.
About 100 CEDAR WAXWINGS and 100 EVENING GROSBEAKS were feasting in our
groves of Cascaras. AMERICAN ROBINS and WESTERN TANAGERS were also
present in smaller numbers. Other species seen in much smaller numbers or
as singles were BLACK-CHINNED HUMMINGBIRD, PACIFIC-SLOPE FLYCATCHER,
RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER and WILSON'S WARBLER.
Hopefully with the improving weather we will get good numbers and variety
of birds over the next five weeks. Yesterday Stuart Johnston found the
county's first AMERICAN REDSTART while doing survey work along Collins
Creek near Home Valley, so who knows what can show up.
