Hi All -

A Whimbrel (called "Winnie") that was captured on the eastern shore of
Virginia this past May and fitted w/ a satellite transmitter is currently at
Willapa Bay, WA. Remarkably (and unexpectedly), this bird made a non-stop
(3200 miles in 146 hrs.) trans-continental flight this past May from Virgina
to the McKenzie R. near the Alaska/Canada border. From mid-July to early
August it worked its way west and south in Alaska and on 8/2 made a long
flight over the Pacific and south along the se coast of Alaska and coastal
B.C. to arrive in Grays Harbor, WA on 8/6. A link to the tracking map is
below as well as links to several articles of interest. The transmitter is
solar powered and could possibly remain active for 3 years or more.

Charles.
