RARE BIRD ALERT for a LESSER GOLDFINCH seen regularly in Abbotsford
from June 11th to August 21st.


Sightings for Friday, August 22nd

At the Maplewood Conservation Area in North Vancouver, 3 COMMON
TERNS were reported.


Sightings for Thursday, August 21st

The NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was seen again along the east dyke at
the Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta. Also at Reifel were 5 PURPLE
MARTINS, 7 SANDHILL CRANES, 2 PEREGRINE FALCONS, and lots
of shorebirds, which included a BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, 5 PECTORAL
SANDPIPERS, and 3 WILSON'S PHALAROPES.

The long-staying male LESSER GOLDFINCH was seen again at 2093
Topaz Street in Abbotsford, near Highway 1 east of Vancouver.


Sightings for Wednesday, August 20th

A NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH was found along the east dyke at the
Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Delta.

A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER and 2 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS were
at the Serpentine Fen Wildlife Area in Surrey.


Sightings for Tuesday, August 19th

Shorebirds of note included 8 RED-NECKED PHALAROPES and 4
WILSON'S PHALAROPES at the Highway 17 pond in Delta just
north of Deltaport Way; a WILLET and a WHIMBREL along the
Tsawwassen ferry jetty; a RUDDY TURNSTONE and 2 BAIRD'S
SANDPIPERS among more than 6000 WESTERN SANDPIPERS and
1000 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS near the foot of Boundary Bay in
Delta; a SOLITARY SANDPIPER and 2 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS at
the Iona Island sewage ponds in Richmond; and a LONG-BILLED
CURLEW and a MARBLED GODWIT at Blackie Spit in Surrey.
Also off Blackie Spit were about 40 COMMON TERNS.

The LESSER GOLDFINCH was seen again at the seed feeders at
2093 Topaz Street in Abbotsford.

A SOLITARY SANDPIPER was seen in Vancouver's Stanley Park near
the stone bridge at the west end of Lost Lagoon.


Sightings for Monday, August 18th

Three RUDDY TURNSTONES and three RED-NECKED PHALAROPES
were seen near the foot of 96th Street on Boundary Bay in Delta.


Sightings for Sunday, August 17th

An ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD was seen at 2100 Bowser in North Vancouver.


Sightings for Saturday, August 16th

A GRAY CATBIRD and 7 TURKEY VULTURES were seen at the east
foot of 104th Avenue in Surrey, near the Barnston Island ferry landing.


No sightings reported for Friday, August 15th


Sightings for Thursday, August 14th

The male LESSER GOLDFINCH at 2093 Topaz Street in Abbotsford, first
reported there on June 11th, is still coming daily to the seed feeders.


Sightings for Wednesday, August 13th

An immature HEERMANN'S GULL was reported from Wreck Beach near Point
Grey in Vancouver, an unusual location for this species.

An escaped BLUE AND YELLOW MACAW was reported in Vancouver along
Marine Drive near the University of BC campus.


Sightings for Tuesday, August 12th

A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was seen along the Boundary Bay dyke trail
near Mud Bay Park in Surrey.

In the Pitt Meadows area, sightings included 3 GRAY CATBIRDS, 7 EASTERN
KINGBIRDS, and 7 TURKEY VULTURES.


Sightings for Monday, August 11th

The male LESSER GOLDFINCH is still being seen several times a day at
2093 Topaz Street in Abbotsford.

Two adult HEERMANN'S GULLS were seen at Lighthouse Marine Park on
Point Roberts, Washington.

Six WHIMBRELS, the long-staying WILLET, and an AMERICAN KESTREL
were seen along the Tsawwassen ferry jetty in Delta.


Sightings for Sunday, August 10th

A high count of 156 BLACK TURNSTONES was made at the Tsawwassen
ferry terminal in Delta. Also there were 4 WHIMBRELS and 2 juvenile
BLACK OYSTERCATCHERS with adults.

At the Beach Grove Lagoon in Delta, at the east foot of 12th Avenue on
Boundary Bay, were many shorebirds including a STILT SANDPIPER
and 5 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS.


Sightings for Saturday, August 9th

A local high count of 14 EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVES was seen near 4655
96th Street in Delta, and one more was in the 4100 block of River Road in
Delta.

A LONG-BILLED CURLEW and a MARBLED GODWIT were at Blackie
Spit Park in Surrey, at the mouth of the Nicomekl River on Mud Bay.

RED-NECKED PHALAROPES were seen at several locations, with
11 at the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, 4 at the Highway 17 pond north of
Deltaport Way, and 7 along the Boundary Bay shoreline, all in Delta.

Two RUDDY TURNSTONES were seen on the Boundary Bay shoreline
between 96th and 104th Streets in Delta. Also in Delta, 100 BLACK
TURNSTONES, 4 WHIMBRELS, and 32 CASPIAN TERNS were seen
at and near the Tsawwassen ferry terminal.

A SOOTY GROUSE seen in Burnaby Mountain Park in Burnaby was very
unusual away from the North Shore mountains.


Sightings for Friday, August 8th

The male LESSER GOLDFINCH at 2093 Topaz Street in Abbotsford is
still coming daily to the feeders, but is being seen most often in the
evenings.
