Hello, tweets.

Earlier this afternoon there was a Western Wood-Pewee in the yard. I
wouldn't have known it, except it gently bumped into the window when
after an insect, and I looked up and saw it perched on a nearby tree
branch. It seemed fine after its visit to the window. Their
occurrence in our yard covers a fairly narrow window of time. My
records in fall:

24 Aug 93
14-19 Aug 94
19 Aug 95
15 Aug 96
23 Aug 98
2-4 Sep 00
23 Aug 08

Just for the sake of completeness, here are my spring records:

2 May 93
25 May-2 Jul 94 (only time one has been present for a lengthy period)
2 Jun 96
4-8 Jun 97
22 May 98
29 May-5 Jun 99
20 May 01

It's a surprisingly late spring migrant here, perhaps younger birds
that are still wandering before they settle on a territory. I think a
lot of the neotropical migrants in Seattle in early summer are young
birds, perhaps few of them actually breeding.

I spend a lot less time in the yard than I used to, I assume the main
reason for the reduced number of sightings in recent years. Come to
think of it, I've been going on a lot of dragonfly trips in recent
years right around the wood-pewee period!
