Scott, et al,

A few years ago, in mid-August, we were?driving?up?the Salmon River, near North Fork, Idaho, when we witnessed a feeding flock of >500 nighthawks. It was early evening and the nighthawks were feeding on a large hatch of insects just above the river. It was quite a spectacle and many folks had pulled off the road to watch.
This went on for at least 30 minutes before the birds began to disperse, and there's no telling how long they had been at it before we arrived on the scene.

Tweets and Yakkers,

Saturday evening around 7pm I witness a flock of Common Nighthawks
that was larger than any congregation of this species I have ever seen
before. About 6 miles ESE of Yakima I counted 279 of these birds in a
single feeding group. They were coursing back and forth about 500 feet
high in a long narrow feeding flock that probably spanned 3000 by 1000
feet. I am thinking this may be a sign that they are beginning to
stage for the migration south. Has anyone seen anything like this
before?
