Around Labor Day weekend in western Iowa, nighthawks flock over the
ridges. I've seen flocks (?) of 30-50 over a ridge and dozens of flocks
over a late afternoon. Through Sept., they drift into Kansas, and I've
seen the same thing down into southern Kansas.

Must be some good bugs over those cornfields.

Scott, et al,

A few years ago, in mid-August, we were?driving?up?the Salmon River,
near North Fork, Idaho, when we witnessed a feeding flock of >500
nighthawks. It was early evening and the nighthawks were feeding on a
large hatch of insects just above the river. It was quite a spectacle
and many folks had pulled off the road to watch.
This went on for at least 30 minutes before the birds began to disperse,
and there's no telling how long they had been at it before we arrived on
the scene.
