What Crazy Dave saw was probably a Cooper's Hawk or a Northern Goshawk (NG).
Some of Crazy Dave's words describe BOTH a Cooper's Hawk and a NG. Some of
his words and phrases are unconventional, therefor I don't understand them. 2
stories relating to the Kavanaugh Road area; then my sighting of today 25
August. About 4 years ago, it was reported to me, by a man who has a feeder
station near Kavenaugh Road. The man stated that young Cooper's Hawks were
raiding his feeder station. Were they Cooper's Hawks? I don't know. I will say
that they probably were Cooper's Hawks. Second story; some time after 911, I
was hawking near Kavenaugh Road. A NG came out of the sky and went over a
man's head and into the thick trees. I walked toward the area. The man walked
toward me. He was an armed security guard and questioned me. The road I was on
was public property. I asked the guard if he saw the hawk that flew over his
head and went into the trees. His answer was "no". The refinery area, to
me, seems to have a lot of potential for birds and raptors. But, I don't bird
there often - because it has not panned-out. Now- 2008; at 12:45 P.M., near
Kavenaugh Road; 1 male NG. The bird was soaring and circling over the refinery
at elevation of about 800-1000 feet. The bird was 45 degrees off my zenith.
The bird did come near my zenith at about 800 or more feet elevation. I did
not bother to raise my camera. Observation time; about 10 minutes. This bird
was typical male NG. The wings were short and stubby. This bird was not lanky
as are most Cooper's Hawks. Note; in no way should this report suggest what
Crazy Dave observed. Cheers and good birding- Nelson Briefer Anacortes,
