Following my own advice, I took the bus to Green River Community College (well I would have anyway), and I explored the?area?I don't usually?walk in. That is called "Dead Horse Canyon". It is the eastern part of the forest in the college boundary. The west side of the canyon is part of the main trail system. To get to the eastern part you have to walk through the gravel parking lot on the east side of the student housing.
?
Just to the north of the canyon is a small tennis court and a drainage pond. In the cat tails of this pond I found 4 Red-winged Blackbirds. Then nearby were some Steller's Jays. One of them was funny looking....not Steller's at all but a Scrub Jay!
?
Anymore Scrub Jays don't really surprise me. They are common in my native Renton. They can be reliably found near the Kent Ponds. I also run into them from time to time in downtown Auburn.
?
Some additional bus info at GRCC; the #164 doesn't run on weekends, but the #181does. The college is the last stops for these buses so you don't have to worry about missing your stop. Another reason these buses are a good idea during an active school quarter is that parking can be really, really, really bad, especially during early fall quarter!
?
Speaking of fall, it can be really gorgeous on these trails. Come to see the Salmon in the river and it's oxbows!
