That is (or was) a Northwestern Salamander ( Ambystoma gracile) one of the most common (and large )'pond'-type salamanders we have in the state. It doesn't have a long ridge on the back -rather an indentation along the spine which may not show accurately in the photo. These salamanders have large poison producing glands just behind the eyes, similar to a toad - so don't try eating one yourself! -

I am not a herp expert but that is a big salamander this bird has in its beak - and the form is certainly strange (is that a long ridge standing up along the entire length of its back?) Can someone identify the creature for me?
