Dear Tweeters,

Today (Wednesday, 8-27-08) I checked the Skagit River at Lyman (Skagit County). There were five Common Terns fishing there! I had not seen them upriver before, and only seldom in the county.

Usually it takes me three or four intense September searches at Samish Island or certain other coastal spots, just to find some Common Terns. They are usually far out in the bay, and doing their best to escape from Parasitic Jaegers.

The terns in Lyman today were having a ball. They caught lots of small fish, then perched on driftwood, their crops bulging. It was possible to observe them quite closely with a scope.

Yours truly,

Gary Bletsch ? Near Lyman, Washington (Skagit County), USA ? garybletsch at yahoo.com ? ?
