Mark and I had a good walk in Lincoln Park today, late morning when the sun
was shining. We saw this first group, practically standing in place in the
south woods in the span of a half hour. (Enter from North Parking Lot on the
trail that veers south, and head into the woods at the "Y", instead of
following the trail by the bank.) This spot is frequently really good in the
fall, if one hits it on the right day. I hope I can remember them all....We
were in the park for about an hour and half. Sore necks from looking up!
Never any guarantees, but next time, chaise lounges!

By the water, not much except a few gulls and a Caspian Tern. Then we saw a
lone MURRELET fishing with the fly fishermen and a seal. It was in
alternate plumage...mostly..., but belly whitish, and with one white patch
on the wing. The bill seemed a bit heavier than the pictures in Sibley of
the Marbled,so if anyone else sees it, I'd like to know what you think.
Yellowish legs. The tide was quite low. I've not seen one that close to
shore at Lincoln before.

On the home front, for HUMMINGBIRD fans, we had an incident yesterday. We
are a six feeder establishment with way too many Hummer plants. We have been
mobbed with juvenile Rufous Hummingbirds of late. When Mark opened the
front door to let in some fresh air last evening, in flew a young Anna's
with a young Rufous in hot pursuit. The birds flailed themselves against a
large window trying to get out. We were finally able to get them to perch
on the spine of a magazine (NOT at the same time!) and eventually they were
out the door and on their way. Fortunately, the cat was not at his usual
perch by the window.

Proving yet again, that one does not have to drive very far to have birding
adventures.
