An great day for shorebirds this late morning and early afternoon
(8/31/08) at Dungeness Bay, as the tide pushed birds towards shore.
Other than the usual culprits (BB Plovers, Semipalmated Plovers,
Killdeer, Greater Yellowlegs, Sanderlings, Western and Least
Sandpipers, SB Dowitchers) there were:

Red Knot - 1 juvenile foraging with SB Dowitchers off the Dungeness
Bay Oysterhouse at Dungeness Landing County Park.
Pectoral Sandpiper - 1 juvenile foraging in the tidal flood puddles
on the west side of the road near 3 Crabs Restaurant.
Baird's Sandpiper - 2 juveniles sticking out like a sore thumb in a
large flock of Western and Least Sandpipers on the mudflats west of
the Dungeness Bay Oysterhouse, at Dungeness Landing County Park.
Stilt Sandpiper - 1 beautiful juvenile foraging at the water's edge
with a flock of about 50 SB Dowitchers, on the mudflats straight out
from the bird observation platform at Dungeness Landing County Park.
All the other STSA I've seen at Dungeness have been at coastal ponds,
so this seemed a little odd.

In addition, one Sora walked non-chalantly in full view on mud near
the mouth of Meadowbrook Creek, the creek that flows out near 3 Crabs
Restaurant. The Sora stood around for a couple minutes, then crept
back into the weeds, never to be seen again.

If anyone is interested, the Migrant Shorebird and Gull Class at the
Dungeness River Audubon Center in Sequim begins this Thursday, 9/4,
and runs for the next three weeks, through 9/18. Other than some
introductory remarks at the Center on 9/4, the class is all in the
field, focusing on birds in Dungeness Bay and Port Angeles Harbor.
