It's been fun reading about all the people who have been finding Anna's in
their yard this winter, for the first time. We also never had them before
this year, in Puyallup. This time, a male staked out the place in spring and
we have been watching his plumage mature. His informal name is
Scooter, short for his formal name of Mean Motor Scooter. Right now we
are feeding Scooter, another male, and one female, and as the weather
turns colder getting lots of aerial fights. Fortunately I work at home, so it's
a great time waster.

Freezing weather: I suggested to Clarice that we just put a few drops of
vodka in the mix, but she threatened to pluck me if I tried it. I guess I
agree, as Scooter would probably be a mean drunk. We put up one of
those feeders that attach directly to glass with a suction cup-- it works well
because just enough heat escapes from the sliding glass door to keep it
from actually freezing. Since we still have the original feeder out, it drives
Scooter to distraction defending them both. As to the original feeder, I am
kept busy bringing it in at night and out in the morning. Every morning I
am greeted by flashing pink at eye level when I open the back door. I
suppose, as it gets even colder, I will have more excuse to avoid working.
