Just returning from a trip to Argentina, where I finally saw the Variegated Flycatchers I was a day too late for at Windust.? A question for anyone in Tweeterland who may be familiar with the behavior of said birds:? Are they known to be nest parasites??
I watched a pair working through a Red-rumped Cacique nesting colony in Calilegua Nat'l Park.? Shortly after a?cacique left its nest, the two flycatchers beelined to it.? While one "stood guard" less than a foot away, the other entered the hanging, oriole-style nest, and remained?out of sight inside for about 30-45 seconds--admittedly probably not long enough for what I was suspecting.? As soon as the flycatcher emerged from the nest, the two flew off together.? I can't find any source that will back up my suspicion, but also can't think of any other reason for this behavior.? Any ideas or info would be greatly appreciated!
