We had tried a plumber's heat tape under our feeder, but found that coiled
up, it provided too much heat (ours was spec'd at about 85 watts). We now
are trying a "mug warmer", purchased at Bartells for about $9. These
usually run around 18 watts. One needs to be sure to find one that is flat
on top. We have put it on a scrap of plywood, using a few nails around the
warmer to keep the feeder from falling off. So far, so good. It has been
very cold here, but the solution has yet to freeze. The warmer is not built
for weather resistance, so we would not recommend it unless the feeder is
under a porch or other cover.
