Tweeters,
When I went out to refill the feeding stations just after dawn this morning,
the temp was 11.7 deg F, but because there was no wind, it wasn't too bad.
Yeah, right: I had to thaw out my fingers before refilling the seed buckets
when I came back inside!
In the past half hour, I estimated the number of birds both feeding and in
the trees at about 246 of 26 species. The eight sparrow species were all
here again today.
Ring-necked Pheasant - 1
California Quail - 7 (although the main flock of about 20 flew across the
street when I scattered some seed near where they were coveyed-up)
Mourning Dove - 37
Downy Woodpecker - 3
Steller's Jay - 5
Black-capped Chickadee - 15
Chestnut-backed Chickadee - 10
Red-breasted Nuthatch - 4
Ruby-crowned Kinglet - 2 (feeding at two different suet stations)
American Robin - 1
Varied Thrush - 1 (the first of the season here)
European Starling - 25 (across the street in the old apple orchard)
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 1 (feeding on the ground and at a suet station -
poss the same female as last winter?)
Spotted Towhee - 5
Fox Sparrow - 6
Song Sparrow - 8
Lincoln's Sparrow - 1
White-throated Sparrow - 1
White-crowned Sparrow - 2
Golden-crowned Sparrow - 12
Dark-eyed Junco - 50
Red-winged Blackbird - 2
Purple Finch - 15
House Finch - 15
Pine Siskin - 7
House Sparrow - 10
In addition, about 20 Cackling Geese overflew a few minutes ago.
May all your birds be identified,
Denis DeSilvis
