Just because you don't see flowers outside your window doesn't mean there isn't something - or was
something until about 2 weeks ago, blooming somewhere. There are acres of introduced plants like hardy
fuchsia, and mahonia in flower until this very recent freeze, and hummingbirds feeding on them and the
attendent insects.
I doubt that this sudden freeze killing or covering the flowers with ice resulting in a sudden end to the food
supply would cause any animal to immediately pack up their bags and migrate to sunny Arizona. they
would more likely continue to explore the immediate real estate until they ran out of gas and died. It isn't
just feeders that have allowed Anna's to expand their range, it's escallonia and manzanita and lots of
flowering plants in landscapes and gardens also contributing.
