With all the discussion about wintering Anna's Hummingbird, I've got
gotten interested in the question of their lives here in summer, since they are
considered to be resident birds. I've read through F. Gary Stiles' thesis
work from 1973- Santa Monica Mountains near LA. Those Anna's breed from
December through May, and then move up into the mountains for the wildflowers there,
returning to the lowlands by fall. Stiles says these moves are based on
food availability ( a lot of the plants they use are dried up by May). Another
factor is the role of the Rufous hummingbirds who dominate at bushes and
feeders, and return by early March.
So what happens with Annas who have established residence here in the
NW? Do they nest in our back yards? Do they get dominated by the Rufous
migrating in? Anybody have any experience with this?
