Hi Brad et. al.,
Brads post reminded me of a blast from the past, perhaps this is not as strange a thing as it might seem. My life Virginia and Sora Rails (yes, we referred to them as Sora Rails back then), were both feeder birds. The proprietor of a small inn (motel) in Inverness CA, along Tamales Bay used to keep a feeder up. It was adjacent to the salt marsh. It was well known locally and at high tide this place was amazing. It was one of the go to places for Black Rails, rare but just regular enough though I never happened to see one there. My first ever Swamp Sparrow was also seen there, which at that time (early 1970's) seemed like a very good bird for the west coast.
The location is adjacent to Point Reyes National Seashore and the last time I passed through a couple of years ago the motel was still there. I'm sure the inn keeper has passed on since as he was old back then but who knows.
Cheers, good birding, and Happy Holidays...
Bill Shelmerdine
