Hey tweets, I noticed that after sitting at home cooped up for the past
three days, I was beginning to sprout moss, so I figured I'd better
head out to the Fill and freeze it off. That worked a treat, although
I also froze my toes and nose.

The sparrows were out in force today, feeding on chicory: numerous
LINCOLN'S, GOLDEN-CROWNS, and SONG SPARROWS, along with a lonely
SAVANNAH. Among the sparrows were three WESTERN MEADOWLARKS who seem to
have settled in for the winter.

Other good birds today: RUDDY DUCK, CINNAMON TEAL, WINTER WREN, BELTED
KINGFISHER.

All the ponds are frozen solid, and so is the lagoon over by the old
wooden bridge. Large numbers of crows were flapping around Union Bay
and cawing, but I think it was just crowly chatter - couldn't spot any
raptors to bother them, although two RED-TAILED HAWKS and a BALD EAGLE
pair were about. The wigeons seemed to think that with so many crow
protectors around, they were safe to congregate in the bay. The poor
things had little choice, since all their other favorite places were
rock solid.

If this weather keeps up much longer, I expect to see a couple of
woolly mammoths show up. - Connie, Seattle
