Dear Tweets,I have The Audubon Society Guide to Attracting Birds and it says
"Use 1 part sugar to 4 parts water when first attracting hummingbirds, but
decrease the proportion to 1 part sugar to 6 parts water after hummers learn
the location of your feeders. This reduces the danger to the liver and
encourages the birds to feed more on natural foods (Page 364)." I usually
stick to the 1 part sugar to 4 parts water ratio all year round and the
hummingbirds in the wintertime do just fine with it. I don't think that
anyone should be increasing the sugar content. Even if the risk of enlarging
the liver isn't "proven" I think what we provide the hummingbirds is
sufficient for their needs.
