One thing that I haven?t seen mentioned anywhere (perhaps because it?s not
an issue) is the effect on sugar concentration of freezing of part of the
water in the feeder. Does the freezing process exclude sugar from the ice?s
molecular structure, as happens in some other crystallization situations? So
for instance, if the top half of the feeder contains frozen water, is the
bottom still-liquid part resultingly sweeter?

On another note, two red-breasted sapsuckers have been enjoying the huge
Atlas spruce trunk right outside my window since the first big snow. The
last time I was able to get photographs of this species in this location was
last March.
